Cupcakes and Widgets

Posted by zahid on May 19, 2009 in Company News |

Its been a while since Google started rolling out the 1.5 update and along with it came quite a few nifty new features, one of which was the ability to support homescreen widgets.  Though a sizeable chunk of Europe now seems to have update 1.5, in the US its still only a handfull of people that seem to have it yet. Widgets just seemed like such a brilliant idea we decided to create some of our own that would greatly improve the experience of using your brilliant G1.

Initially the plan was to create a 4 x 1 widget that would include the most common widgets. But after some careful discussions (namely getting everyone in the office to do a quick vote) it was unanimously decided that it would be far better to have individual widgets so users can pick and choose which ones they wanted. You’re not lumped with a widget taking up space that you would never use. You also have the ability to arrange the widgets onto the screen however you wish.

Ringer Toggle Widget

Wifi Toggle widget

Brightness Toggle Widget

Bluetooth Toggle Widget

GPS Toggle Widget

Google’s Restrictions
A few things which will really bug a lot of developers is the restrictions that Google has placed on some previously open API’s. For us this meant not having direct access to the GPS API directly to Toggle On/Off in the same way that we have for Wifi or Sound. GPS was the only one which didn’t have 1 click toggle and meant on click we launch the settings panel, thus giving the user an extra (uneccessary) step. Oh well, GPS Toggle was something a lot of you out there had asked for and after getting feedback that “2 clicks is still better than 4″ we decided it was still worth developing it. The feedback from you all seems to be that you love it and so we’re glad we did release it now :)

Thanks for all these great widgets!

Another good “2 clicks is still better than 4″ one would be 2G/3G toggling. Especially if you could get the icon to display the current setting (the G / 3G icon on the status bar doesn’t show you the exact setting, just what you’re currently connected to given the current local reception).

Keep up the good work!

Nice apps but I still thinking you can fut all five in a 4 x 1 space and make it optional to horizontal/vertical widget also a very important option, change the background color that light blue doesn’t look good with some wallpapers.

Excelent job guys!

If you want a different look, someone at XDA has changed the icons for all of these except the volume widget. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=518979

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the heads up, they do look great :)

I have downloaded them onto my G1 through the Market, but they won’t open. I get an error every time I try to open any of them. Help anyone?

Hi Ben,
Thanks for trying out our widgets. The reason you can’t launch them is because widgets work slightly differently than standard apps. What you have to do is the following for widgets.

Press “Menu” when on your homescreen then “Add” and then “Widgets” then select our toggle widget from the menu.

Menu - > Add - > Widgets - >Bluetooth Toggle Widget.

Try that and let me know if it works for you!

I just installed your bluetooth widget. Very nice. Just what I was looking for. I use bluetooth in my car with MS sync voice recognition but it kills the battery so I am always turning it on/off. You just saved me a minute or two each day.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the feedback. Its that extra 2 minutes on each little thing that seem to make a big difference :)

Hi, thanks for the widgets, they’re great. I want you to know, that I’ve used your design for my own widget (http://toggleheadset.googlecode.com). I also gave you credit at the project’s website. If you disagree with copying your work, please leave me a note and I will rework the graphics as soon as possible. Thanks again.

Probably not possible, but I wish there was a widget to connect a paired Bluetooth device when in proximity. I get in my car (or worse, at the first traffic light) and fidget to connect. Your Bluetooth Tooth Toggle is step one…

Great concept, very simple usage. Nice price :)

Would like to see the Bluetooth widget have multiple states: BT off, BT on but not paired, and BT on and paired. Ideally the pairing would badge the icon with the kinds of device to which it is paired: car, headset, computer. Clicking on any of the “on” states would turn Bluetooth off.

Likewise for the WiFi widget: WiFi off, WiFi on but not associated with an access point, and WiFi on and associated and with an IP address. Clicking on either of the “on” states would turn WiFi off.

Also would like to see longpress to set different skins - the default full-frame blue kind of jars against the more shaped outline, multi-colored system icons.

Nice widgets. Love the design of the icons. 2G/3G toggle would be nice, but what I really want is a battery monitor (percentage charge) in the same style as the others. Any chance?

Thanks v much for these widgets, I love them. However, I recently installed Open Home, and the widgets don’t show up anymore in the list of widgets to put on the Home screen? Am I doing something wrong or is it just not compatible?

Hi Jules, our widgets are for the standard android home screen so they are not compatible with open home. They may in the future be compatible as open home and other home screen applications are able to create their framework such that they can accept standard android widgets too. Hope this helps!

Would love a 2g/3g toggle even if it took multiple clicks.

a 2g/3g toggle widget to match these would be much appreciated!

Please do a 2 instead of 4 clicks widget for 2G/3G. There is a version of it already on the market but I’d rather use a full set of yours so that they all look the same and satisfy my OCD :P

Hi, wonderful set of widgets.
How about one that toggles the cellular radio on or off, so when you don’t want to receive any calls you can still play with the phone using wi-fi connectivity? the airplaine mode cuts every radio, so it’s useless.
For now I made a shortcut with ‘AnyCut’ app to a hidden menu that can toggle radio on or off very easily.
Would be much appreciated! Thanks.
Keep up the good work

How about a toggle to enable/disable the APN (ie. 3G/EDGE/GPRS)? I am using a data plan that makes me pay more for excessive data usage, so I have the habit of turning it off when I don’t need to be connected. Actually there is another App available of the market that does this, but one with a matching icon would be nice. ;)

Hi Fredo,
The widgets are all independent 1×1 widgets. You can download them seperately, choosing only those that you need (hopefully you’ll find all of them useful). To download just search for the following:
Wifi Toggle Widget
Ringer Toggle Widget etc.
Let me know if you have any issues.

Regards
Ansar

Thanks for these widgets, they are really great!
One question - why does the Bluetooth one say “toggling”, while the wifi one does not?
I like that it says that :)

Great work, really great.

Would love a toggle for turning off the accelerometer. When I run with my phone, the orientation is constantly changing, eating up resources, which makes Pandora and Mytracks lag. So, I’d like to make it stay in portrait mode!

the wifi widget (Droid) changes to indicate wifi on/off, nice.
the Bluetooth widget says it is toggling but does not change. Not sure if it is not toggling or just not changing. Guess I should have checked in settings, but got impatient and bailed.

Is this a Droid issue that may be fixed soon? I would love it if it worked AND showed status.

Curiosity got the best of me. Reinstalled Bluetooth toggle and it does NOT toggle, which is probably why it does not change to indicate OFF.
hope you can/will fix.

2 clicks better than 4 on GPS, thanks

The Motorola Droid that I just got has a Power Control widget pre-installed. I guess the difference with your is that I can just pick one or more of the widgets. The one on the Droid has Wifi, Bluetooth, ?3G, Ringer and brightness all in one.
